How to use it
Type the centimeters in the Metric cm box. The answer is the nearest fraction of an inch you would find on a tape measure, and the Inches box shows the decimal. The Feet-inch box gives the same length as feet and inches, which is how a height is usually given.
The fraction is rounded to the nearest 1/16 inch and marked with ≈ when rounding changed it. To go from inches to centimeters, type in the Inches box, such as 12, and read the Metric cm box.
The math
- Centimeters to inches: divide by 2.54. 30 ÷ 2.54 = 11.811 inches, which is about 11 13/16".
- Centimeters to feet and inches: divide by 2.54 to get inches, then by 12. 170 cm is 66.9291 inches; 12 goes into that 5 times with 6.9291 inches left over, so 170 cm is about 5' 7" to the nearest 1/4 inch.
- Inches to centimeters: multiply by 2.54. 12 inches is 12 × 2.54 = 30.48 cm.
One inch is exactly 2.54 cm. For smaller parts in millimeters, use the mm to inches converter; for the other direction in millimeters, the inches to mm converter.
